ALIAS

Adaptable Ambient Living Assistant

The objective of the “ALIAS“ project is to develop a voice-controlled, mobile robot system that supports older persons in their daily lives. The robot is not intended to replace human interaction, but to help the user, through modern telecommunications technology, to maintain and expand existing personal contacts. It is a central concern of the project to promote the social integration of older persons and thus avoid the danger of isolation. To help preserve life quality, the user’s cognitive activities are also to be stimulated.

Scope of Responsibility of Fraunhofer Institute IDMT

In the framework of the “ALIAS“ project, the project group Hearing, Speech, and Audio Technology at the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT covers the whole field of acoustic interaction between user and robot. This includes speech recognition, voice control, and acoustic environment analysis. Noise-reduction, localization, and direction-filtering technologies are applied for the necessary signal preprocessing. On the application side, the project group is working on the aspect of memory assistance, building on preliminary work from the “GAL“ project.
