Design of Environments for Ageing

The use of information and communication technology for the design of environments for ageing is of great societal relevance with regard both to the quality of life for broad sections of the population and to future economic development.

The Lower Saxony Research Network Design of Environments for Ageing (“Gestaltung altersgerechter Lebenswelten”, “GAL“) deals with the question of the contribution that information and communication technology can make toward maintaining and improving people’s life quality, health, and self-determination in the second half of their lives.

The objective is to identify, further develop, and evaluate processes for age-appropriate living environments. Initial results of “GAL’s“ work include a personal activity and household assistant; a system that automatically detects the working condition of household appliances; an optically based system for fall recognition in the domestic environment; a personal electronic health record; and sociological, economic, and psychological findings from accompanying research.

The project is funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture (VWZN 2420/2524).
